Most cataract lens implants are fixed. The power is set during surgery from measurements of your eye, and that is the result you live with. The Light Adjustable Lens is different.

The lens is built with special light-sensitive molecules, so its power can be changed after your eye has healed. In a quick, painless treatment, a controlled beam of UV light from the Light Delivery Device (LDD) reshapes the lens and changes how your eye focuses. You see the result, tell us what you want, and we refine it. That is why it is the most versatile lens we offer.

See your result, then refine it.

A fixed lens is a single best estimate made before surgery. The Light Adjustable Lens lets you preview real-world vision first, then dial it in.
Fixed Lens

Set during surgery

Your doctor chooses the power from measurements taken before surgery. It is an excellent option for many patients, but the power cannot change once it is in.

Adjustable

Tuned after surgery

You live with your new vision for a couple of weeks, then adjust it with light treatments until it matches your goals, whether that is sharp distance, reading, or a blend.

Surgery first, then you customize.

Both eyes are usually done within one to two weeks. The tuning happens afterward, once your eyes have settled.
STEP 01

Cataract surgery

We remove the clouded lens and implant the Light Adjustable Lens, the same gentle outpatient procedure as any cataract surgery. Both eyes are typically done within one to two weeks of each other.

STEP 02

Test-drive your vision

For the next two to three weeks you live with your new vision while your eyes heal. This is the part no fixed lens can offer: you learn what you want before anything is final.

STEP 03

Light treatments

Using your input and our doctor's guidance, the LDD delivers UV light to the lens to adjust its power. Each treatment takes about 90 seconds. Most patients need one to three of them. A driver is strongly recommended for every light-treatment visit.

STEP 04

Lock in the result

Once your vision is where you want it, two final treatments permanently lock the lens power so nothing changes after that.

Wear your UV glasses.

Because the lens reacts to UV light, protecting it between treatments is part of the process.
  • Wear the UV-blocking glasses we provide from right after surgery until 24 hours after your final lock-in treatment
  • Keep them on outdoors and indoors during this period, including around bright lights
  • Do not use tanning beds at any point during this period
  • Once the lens is locked in, the glasses are no longer needed
